Workshop 3

Formalisation of Adaptation in Case-Based Reasoning

Adaptation has been previously discussed during past workshops (for example, at ICCBR-95 or ECAI-96). These discussions showed that the community is deeply divided on the subject. Some were convinced that adaptation could be considered at the knowledge level and at the symbol level as connected to the other steps of the CBR process, whereas others thought that it was not possible at all. Three years after, it is important to make clear the question.

Retrieval and adaptation are probably the most studied phases of case-based reasoning (CBR). There are several general approaches of case retrieval. By contrast, adaptation is usually considered to be a complex domain-dependent task. The main goal of this workshop is to debate the question: "Are there general approaches for implementing the adaptation module of a CBR system?".

Researchers interested to present some positive or negative arguments to this question are invited to submit a paper to this workshop. The following list gives an idea of what can be of interest in the framework of this workshop:

The four hours of the workshop will be organised with short talks and longer discussions. Each talk is an occasion to expose a single idea related to the subject of the workshop. The discussions are about the talks and the themas emerging from the papers and the talks.

The submitted papers must contain an abstract and must not exceed four pages. The papers should have the ICCBR'99 format. It should be a presentation of a single idea related to the subject of the workshop.

Submissions can be made by electronic or surface mail, with a preference for the former way. Electronical submissions must be sent in postcript to (conference closed) Surface mail submissions must be sent at
